Discover Middleburg, Virginia

Welcome to Middleburg, Virginia, a picturesque town nestled in the heart of Loudoun County. Known as the "Nation's Horse and Hunt Capital," Middleburg's story is woven with the threads of American history, equestrian tradition, and a vibrant community spirit.

A Colonial Beginning

Founded in 1787 by Revolutionary War Lieutenant Colonel and Virginia statesman, Leven Powell, Middleburg was originally known as "Chinn's Crossroads" before being renamed to reflect its location midway between Alexandria and Winchester on the Ashby Gap trading route. Powell purchased the land for Middleburg at the surprisingly low price of $2.50 per acre, a humble beginning for what would become a center of American heritage and culture.

A Rich Equestrian Legacy

By the 20th century, Middleburg had established itself as a premier location for fox hunting and steeplechasing, attracting prominent visitors from across the United States and abroad. The town's rolling hills and sprawling landscapes made it an ideal setting for horse breeding and racing, activities that continue to define the area today. The Middleburg Spring Races and the Virginia Fall Races are annual highlights, drawing crowds eager to witness the thrilling beauty of equestrian sports.

Historic Landmarks and Architecture

Middleburg is home to an array of historic buildings and estates that stand as testaments to its long and varied history. From the Red Fox Inn, established in 1728 and reputed to have hosted President George Washington, to the elegant 19th-century homes that line the streets, the architecture of Middleburg offers a glimpse into the past. Each building and byway tells the story of the generations who have walked these grounds and shaped this community.
